My First Few Months as an MBA Student

I recently embarked on an exciting journey, starting my Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Liverpool. Here’s a look at how my first few months have been and what I’ve experienced so far.

My Transition from a STEM Degree to a Business Degree

Switching from a technical STEM background to a business-focused MBA initially made me nervous, but it has been a rewarding journey so far. One of the biggest adjustments has been moving from solving structured technical problems to applying critical thinking skills to real-world challenges, where there is often no single correct answer. The resources provided for reading, writing, and critical thinking have been invaluable in improving my academic writing for assignments. I’m also excited to be developing my strategic thinking and analytical skills by tackling practical problems that mirror real business scenarios.

What Surprised Me Most About the Culture and Environment of the MBA Course

Based on my previous experience of studying at university, I expected the environment to be quite competitive. However, I’ve found it to be an incredibly supportive and collaborative community. Everyone is happy to help each other, whether it’s answering questions about the course or sharing their leadership experiences. There are people from various backgrounds, which means you can learn a lot from different perspectives – for example, how business is conducted in other countries. It’s also interesting to hear how people are balancing the MBA with their jobs and other commitments. This has helped me develop not only business skills but also personal skills.

How My Perception of Business and Leadership Has Changed So Far

The biggest thing I’ve learned about leadership so far is that there is no single right way to be a good leader – you have to discover your own leadership style. Leadership goes beyond decision-making; it’s also about influencing people and bringing out the best in others. Another key takeaway has been the strong emphasis on ethical decision-making. Business isn’t just about profits; it’s about solving problems and making a positive impact. This has allowed me to reflect on the kind of leader I want to become.

Overall, my MBA journey so far has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I’m excited to see what’s next and to keep expanding my skill set.
