Houses
We are all on Smart Meters now (or will be soon), California should have Smart-everything, so that brownouts are minimised by load-balancing of aircon, heating and the available power. It doesn\’t yet, but it really should.
Power
All of the renewables should be balanced against non-renewables so that power becomes increasingly cleaner. This balance is achieved through connected devices such as routers on wind farms and solar panels.
Organisations
Organisations within industries should be getting connected. They should allow data to pass seamlessly from company to company where it is strategically advantageous for all parties (including customers).

And, then there are all of the interconnections between each of the above. Therein lies the secret of the 4th Industrial Revolution; inside that interconnectivity, gold can be mined, in the form of fresh enterprise.
There are obvious downsides to all of this interconnectedness, bad people with evil intentions can connect with each other across the world, (paedophiles, terrorists and dictators, for example). Democratic processes can be influenced by someone who is thousands of miles away, from their bedroom, in their pyjamas. This can be both benign and harbour evil intent
That bad is far outweighed by the good things though. It is through being connected that also creates Greta Thunberg. Greta is a 16-year old force of nature who is also a ‘pain in the ass\’, but that will not stop her from changing the world.
